[Music] Prince is in the House

Sexy Sexy! This musical genius...who has written thousands of hits both recorded by him and other great artists, is a legend.  I'm probably the only person (lover of 80s music) who has never seen this man live.  Well, come Friday the 27th at the Forum, that's all going to change!  My first Prince concert and I can't take any mind-altering substance due to my very delicate condition.  I'm sure my friends will have my share during Happy Hours before the event.  In any case, I'm super psyched!  The most famous Prince quote I notoriously used while arguing with my crush from college was..."I don't want to be your weekend lover..."

[Update] This is Not an Update

Shame on me for being so lazy that I couldn't type in a few nonsensical sentences on this busy blog!  I wont bore anyone with silly updates, but wanted the blog to show some sign of life.  Yes, I feel a pulse!

[Fashion] Miu Miu Cabachon Slides

When I first saw these Miu Miu online, I initially thought they looked gawdy. Then I see how adorable they look on one of the Olsen twins! I believe the one on the left is Mary-Kate. She's wearing the Miu Miu Cabachon with a black belted trench coat. Her whole look is quite chic and understated, until you stop at her shoes. Lovely way to accessorize a look. I'm also loving Ashley's fabulous shoes! I believe they are Miu Miu as well, but not liking her outfit at all. I don't know which event they were attending here, but Ash that drab sweater is so Banana Republic! Your shoes are simply mismatched here!

Downtown: New Home to Barneys Warehouse Sale

This year, Downtown is home to the massive Barneys Warehouse Sale. I went on opening day and was totally blown away with the shoe selections. Sick. All marked down 60% to 75%.

Of course size availability was an issue on the more desirable brands. It literally took me 3 hours to choose which bad boys would come home with me. My dilemna caught the attention of a Fox 11 reporter who casually walked over to me. He lightly teased me about the stockpile of shoes surrounding me and how I could possibly choose just one pair. The next thing I knew I'm talking into a mic and the camera is aimed right at me! Oh the shame! No makeup, hair undone - shot from a terrible angle! I could've really used a swipe of blush, gloss and mascara. From all this I've confirmed something very disturbing - the camera truly does add weight. Exactly how pin thin is that Alexis chick on Entourage?

The sale is still on-going, with an additional 25% off the sale prices. I think the last day is August 23. If you want to get a feel for the sale before heading to the eastside, watch the news reel:

Barney's Warehouse Sale - FOX 11 News - myFOXla.com

So what was the verdict? The boys I took home with me were Pierre Hardy, Miu Miu, and Roberto del Carlo. I'm on a shoe ban until next year!

Pictures to come!

Voice of a Generation: John Hughes

I was born right at the cusp of Gen X and Y, so although I don't necessarily fall into the 80's generation, I certainly consider myself an 80's kid even if I didn't "come of age" during this sartorially influential period.
I credit John Hughes' films for showing me how to avoid looking uncool. It seriously prepared me for high school. The significance of his film to my youth is insurmountable as I grew up struggling with my own identity in a community of first generation immigrants. Growing up, I wasn't privy to fashion magazines or even had access to them other than quickly perusing the pages of Cosmopolitan at the check out aisle. Fortunately, television was something I did have full access to and the easiest way for me to connect to other cultures outside my own. The prevalent social class issues exhibited throughout his films resonated the most with me. It seemed my own high school far away from the world of Hollywood wasn't immune to the same underlying issues in a lot of his films.
It was teenage angst, to think for ourselves, to live and love without restrictions...

Price Check - Tom Ford Limited Edition Pavlos Aviators

For a second there, I thought my vision had gone bad. In my inbox, there it was - a picture of these fabulous Tom Ford aviators - on sale!

The price said $140! Immediately I was drawn in and entered Net-a-Porter's sister site...only to stare in disbelief as my eyes adjusted to the additional digit. Could this be a typo?
On Sale $1,440!!! Regularly priced at $2,400!!
My virgin eyes had never seen sunglasses priced so liberally before. Insane. For these Tom Ford LIMITED EDITION aviators no less.
I know TF sunnies have skyrocketed to cult status, as seen on almost every celebrity and fashion-concious hipster on the streets. They are no doubt beautifully handcrafted in the highest of quality materials and can command $300+ price tag....but have somebody lost their minds?
It doesn't look too good when something that is limited in quantities is on sale. Or am I just too cheap?

Description:
Ebony wooden framed aviator sunglasses with a gold plated trim.
Tom Ford sunglasses have graduated handmade Zeiss lenses, a discreet designer emblem and a serial number plaque at base of arm.

[Girl Crush] Stylishly Foxy Alexa Chung

Meet Alexa Chung, interview courtesy of WWD.
Several months ago, I discovered the fashionable Ms. Chung online. What drew me to her other than her oh-so covetable, easy and effortless style, was her name.
I LOVE her NAME! I know quite a few Chungs and never had their names sounded or looked this appealing on print. I'm big on names. I've got like tons of name combo DOs and DON'TS.
I'll give ya an example: Never name your kid FRANK if your last name is YU.
Since I don't have a subscription to WWD, I had to copy & paste a post from a sweetheart fashionista off The Fashion Spot. I need to rethink if I should just pay the hefty price and get the damn subscription since about most of the articles and images are so interesting to me! Sure WWD has some freebies off their site, but the meaty ones are for subscribers only!
More photos and information on Ms. Chung's outfit after the post.

Britain’s Got Talent: Alexa Chung's Time to Shine
by Amanda FitzSimons

Since her Stateside exposure has been limited to the occasional party photo in a fashion magazine, Americans would be forgiven if they think Alexa Chung’s sole achievement is her ability to pull off short shorts and teetering heels. But Chung, a 25-year-old former model who’s already made it big in her native England as a TV host, is ready to show this side of the Atlantic what else she has to offer.

“It’s about time Americans hear this s--t,” she says.

On June 15, Chung will make her U.S. debut as host of her own yet-to-be-titled daytime show on MTV. The hour-long live program will feature a mix of celebrity interviews and music performances, all taking place on a set designed to look like a cozy living room.

“[The premise] is I’ve just moved here and I’m trying to meet people, so I’m inviting guests to the show,” explains the host, who relocated from London to the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, N.Y., with rocker boyfriend Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys earlier this month.

And while Chung is inheriting the time slot once occupied by ratings-juggernaut “Total Request Live,” she insists the program is all her own. “I told them I’d have opinions about things,” she says of her initial meeting with MTV producers.

Certainly, Chung has earned the right to have her say. “It’s weird; I’m new to New York, but I’m old hat at [TV],” she says. Chung, whose mother is British and father is Chinese, was discovered by a modeling scout at 16.

“I did loads of bad s--t,” says Chung, who appeared in ads for Tampax. In 2006, she landed a job as a co-host of “Popworld,” a music television show known for its snarky tone. “There’s always people watching you on a photo shoot with modeling, so hosting wasn’t a vast step away from that,” she says. As a sort of personality-for-hire, Chung has also served as everything from a panelist on a quirky quiz show called “8 Out of 10 Cats” to a correspondent who interviewed the likes of Roberto Cavalli and Karl Lagerfeld for a fashion trend show called “Gok’s Fashion Fix.”

Still, Chung remains level-headed about her success. “Presenting isn’t hard. You’re basically reading cards. I mean, how f---ing difficult is that?” she says. “The hard bit is getting over knowing that lots of people are watching you, and you, your personality, not your looks, not your talent for math or something, [is what] they’re judging.” But that’s fine with her. “I’d rather someone go ‘Ah, she’s really funny’ than ‘Ah, she’s really foxy.’”

And, with her latest venture, Chung will know exactly what her audience is thinking because of an online component that encourages viewers to comment via Facebook and Twitter. “You can contact the show and tell us directly we are s--t,” she notes.

Presumably, execs at MTV are counting on more glowing feedback than that. The network’s ratings for the first three months of 2009 dipped 18 percent, and Lauren Conrad, the much-idolized star of the network’s current front-runner, “The Hills,” is jumping ship after this season. In short, there’s a lot riding on Chung.

“We auditioned many, many, many people for this show, and that’s five or six manys,” explains MTV executive vice president of news and production Dave Sirulnick. He says he and his colleagues had been searching for someone to fill Chung’s role for almost three years until a British production company tipped them off about Chung. “We immediately fell in love with her,” he says. “It feels to me that she’s very much in touch with the way our viewers live and think.”

That might be a bit of a stretch. Even though she favors what she calls an “I don’t give a s--t” style, Chung racks up a serious clothing bill. “It’s ironic, because I get to wear nicer clothes and shoot for better magazines now than I did when I was a model,” says Chung, who stockpiles labels including House of Holland, Alexander Wang and Luella Bartley for both on- and off-camera appearances.

But Chung, who doesn’t work with a stylist for events and is still working out the details of her wardrobe situation at MTV, considers such purchases necessary. “I don’t do a normal job. So I have to have more clothes than most people,” she says with a shrug. Nor is she about to dial down her outfits so her teen audience can relate; in fact, she expects to wear many of her own clothes on the show, noting, “I will wear what I always wear from day-to-day.”

And Chung believes being herself will translate into ratings. “I think the mistake a lot of TV channels make is that they assume kids are dumb when they’re not,” she says. “Middle-aged fat men [shouldn’t] tell young people [what] to watch when they have no idea.”

But Chung’s keep-it-real attitude has its limits. “I would never do [reality TV]. It’s 24-7 [of] making things up, making you refilm it,” she says. “[With my show] it’s one hour of me, in control the whole time.”
